John at the age of 21 was totally disillusioned with his boring Civil Service job. The thought of doing this kind of work for the next 40 years would drive him quietly mad he told himself on many occasions.

Property development or waste recycling both appealed to him as a escape routes from the drudgery of Civil Service life. He was under no illusions that success at either or both of these types of businesses required lots of research and hard work. Flat refurbishment seemed the simplest way to start. House extensions and more complex projects could come later as he gained experience as could waste recycling should he wish to diversify.

He decided to hold onto his day job for the time being and carry out his first flat refurbishment project on his own flat. He did his research thoroughly starting with skip hire costs. To keep costs as low as possible he decided to do as much of the general labouring work himself and use tradespeople only when it was absolutely necessary.

It was a lot of very hard work but when the flat refurbishment was finished he was delighted with the result. He was even more delighted when he sold his flat for a significant profit, bought a house where a lot of upgrading work was required and gave up his Civil Service job.

He was even more delighted when the Architect that he had employed suggested that if his budget stretched to it, house extensions would be possible. An additional bedroom could be added as well as an increase in the size of the kitchen.

Once more, when the house extensions and refurbishment were complete, he sold and realised a significant profit. He then moved on to his next property.

However permanently living in property which was being upgraded was beginning to irritate him. He decided that he would not sell this property and give himself a very desirable mortgage free house and make a start at finding out about the world of waste recycling. However it was not his intention to give up property development in the long term

A few years later he was the successful of owner of a waste recycling company and a property development company. His favourite moment was when he was approached by his former employer to provide rented office accommodation. He felt then that he had really arrived.
