I was standing in line at grocery store the other day when this largely overweight man approached me from behind and tapped me on the shoulder. Before I had a chance to say a word he was already trying to sell me on being a handy man and offering his service for any construction needs that I may be performing during the month of June. This was quite unusual to be approached in a grocery store about someone looking to do some freelancing work. I told this elderly obese man that I was a carpenter and I was currently working on building a small wooden shed in my back garden. He quickly extended his hand and introduced himself as Skip Duncan, a former military veteran that needed to earn some extra money so he could go back to Louisiana to take care of his children. He told me jokingly he was skip for hire and would do all the labour jobs that I didn't wanna be doing.
At an attempt to sound interested I asked him how much he would charge a day to build my shed. I was stunned when he told me all he demanded was 20 dollars a day and some free food. This to me actually sounded like a good idea and I thought if this skip for hire guy can finish of building the shed I can concentrate on the house extensions that I am also performing on our house. I could use this man as my personal waste disposal unit. Give him all the dirty jobs I didn't wanna do and pay him minimum wage to do them. The one man business skip for hire had just found himself some work down at my farm.
I asked him straight up if he could start tomorrow at 8am which he gladly agreed to with a huge grin on his face. We shook hands and off I drove to inform my wife that we have ourselves some cheap labour to build the shed. She was more than pleased when I told about how this man who calls himself skip for hire had approached me while I was doing the weekly grocery shopping and offered to work for me. The following morning he turned up dot on 8am and got to work before I even had a chance to offer to cook him a proper breakfast. I think me and Skip will have a strong relationship.
